PROJECT:
Dino Quest Handheld Device
CLIENT: Discovery Cube Science Center
LOCATION: Orange County, CA

As part of a large-scale immersive exhibit, this handheld touchscreen device guided young guests through a mission-based scavenger hunt across a physical dinosaur dig site. I designed the interface and user flow to simulate the process of scientific discovery through interactive storytelling, visual prompts, and progress tracking. The design required balancing playful engagement with clear UI, helping users stay oriented and motivated across a multi-step journey.

Responsibilities:
- Art direction and UI design for a touchscreen handheld device
- UX flow mapping for mission-based progression and engagement
- Visual system and icon design to support nonverbal understanding
- User interface layout and interaction logic for fast comprehension
- Integration planning across physical environment and digital touchpoints
UI DESIGN - HANDHELD GAME
MY ROLE: I designed (and directed) the user interface and production of the game screens. The handheld device had a small-format screen, similar to the size of an Apple iWatch screen, and only two analog buttons for navigation. The challenge was to create engaging screens that fit educational content while ensuring clear legibility and a smooth user experience on the "Dino Tracker".
DESIGN APPROACH: Bright, colorful screens color-code each mission to have its own color identity. For the small screen format, we used simple illustrations and icons for quick visual identification.

PRINTED DESIGN - HANDHELD DEVICE
On the handheld, we also designed the graphic imprint for the physical membrane on the plastic casing. My concept was to theme the design as if it were an electronic scientific tool to help immerse kids in the world of Dino Quest, as if they were using a tracking device on their missions as Jr. Paleontologists.

Further design direction extended to selecting the yellow rubber protective guard backing wrap for the case, as well as the graphic print and branding for the lanyard.
